Happy Birthday, Queen Elizabeth!

Posted by Happy Homemaker UK

Doesn't she look amazing at age 85?!

Although Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926,
her birthday will be celebrated on June 6th
on the 'Queen's Official Birthday'

It has been celebrated with the Queen's Birthday Parade
and Trooping The Colour Ceremony since 1748

Interestingly, any current United Kingdom monarch's birthday is celebrated on the first Monday in June
as an official holiday regardless of the actual birthday
because the weather is typically nice

This day is considered the UK's 'National Day'

Happy Birthday, Queen Elizabeth!

At the risk of sounding pedantic, the Queen's birthday, official or unofficial, is not a National holiday, nor has it ever been, nor do we celebrate in the UK anything termed a 'National Day'.

The confusion may have arisen over the Bank Holiday at the end of May/start of June which previously, coming seven weeks after Easter, was a celebration of Pentecost. This was changed, following a trial period, by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971.

You are absolutely correct about the ceremony of Trooping of the Colour.

Wow! I hadn't realized she was 85! Its funny that she has an official birthday different from her actual one!

Ah, Laura. We also celebrate with 'the Queen's Birthday' long weekend on the first Monday in June in faraway Australia - one of our public expressions of support of the 'Queen of Australia' as she is also titled! J x

I bet fifty quid that good ol' Jane and Lance Hattat have been waiting on tenterhooks to be pedantic. I find it typically Brrrrrritish of them, asking but not asking for citation.
Good post. I liked it.

Here in NSW Australia it is the 2nd Monday in June (the 13th). But I get the impression it's just another reason to enjoy a long weekend for those fun-loving Aussies.

My daughter, whose birthday is a few days after Christmas, wishes she could just pick a birthday where you can be more assured of good weather. She wants to have a birthday party with water games and outside play, and we are usually cooped up indoors. Maybe we'll have to start a "Queen's Birthday" party for her :). Thanks for this post!

Enjoyed this post and compliment you on your courteous approach regarding expressed formalisms.

No one wears hats (or crowns) as elegantly as the Queen; lovely photos!

Hattatt- you are right that it is not called 'National Day', however my understanding that each country has some sort of national day (often an independence day). See this link for details http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_day.
Hope this clears up any confusion, and I appreciate the detailed reading :) XOL

Hello, fellow Okie :)
The Queen looks fantastic! I can only hope to first, make it to 85, and second, look half as good as she!

I would give my right arm for that hat. Of course, I would look ridiculous in it, because I'm not a Queen. But, I would still give my right arm for that hat....
Happy Birthday to Queen Elizabeth! Thanks so much for the info., Miss Laura!

She certainly does! She makes me very proud to be British, she is so hardworking and as you say always looks amazing. She will go down in history as probably one of, if not the best monarch that has sat on the British Throne.

Happy Homemaker 294 followers!!!! Makes my 4 look a bit paltry, mind you only been blogging a few months. Happy Easter! xxx

Hi Laura, Happy Easter! I'm madly catching up on all my favourite blogs after getting back from Paris late last night....still in bed with computer on my lap!! Just to let you know, in Australia we celebrate the Queen's Birthday in early June (I think the first Monday), with a public holiday...so we always have a long weekend. In fact it's treated as the official opening of the winter ski season. I'm really looking forward to the wedding this week, lots going on in the village so it should be fun! Robx

Happy birthday to the Queen. She does look great for her age. I wonder what her secret is? Any chance your next secret mission could be to sneak into her bathroom cabinet and find out?! I will raise bond money for you!

Thank you so much for visiting! I am really enjoying your blog. Love seeing all the wonderful things you are finding in the UK.
