Introduced in July 2010, London has a successful public bicycle sharing scheme
with bikes and 'docks' located throughout the city
Nicknamed 'Boris Bikes' after Boris Johnson, the current Mayor of London,
these bikes can get you around town faster than tube or taxi
But beware, vehicular traffic is congested with few bike lanes
Sitting on the same latitude as Russia,
England gets dark early in winter
so each Boris Bike is equipped with excellent lighting

I love this idea! We first saw these bikes in Barcelona 4 years ago and since then Toronto has installed them too. The lack of bike lanes can be a problem though! :)

We've got them in San Sebastian too! But here the city is well organized with bike lanes.
There is no way I'd get on a bicycle in London traffic... and having seen them in Europe, the same sentiment applies there too!!! Robx
Dublin has a bike scheme as well and it's working pretty good so far. I can't believe none of them have been stolen!
Saw some bike like that last time I was in Sydney, stop by my blog for a give away.
We've recently gained Boris Bikes in Bath. I want to give them a go, but I go no where that justifies their use. It may be time for a trip to London.

This is such a great idea. We saw these bikes in Copenhagen, as well. I loved them!
We have a similar bike program here in Toronto and it is very popular. Bikers do have to be extra cautious of regular traffic however. Recently, a 35 woman who was 5 months pregnant was killed. Very sad!
I think these schemes are great and that every large town should have one! We even saw a similar one in Bangkok recently.
What a great shot of all the bikes! I love this idea- although it might be scarey to ride on congested streets...for riders and drivers. :P
