Having awaited a year to visit 'Pooh Country'
to capture the area as I've pictured it in my head
(aka leaves falling)
I now have images of
Ashdown Forest to share with you,
the real backdrop to AA Milne's
Winnie-The-Pooh series
Yay!

| We had tea and picked up a map here |
Located in Sussex,
Pooh's Bridge is a short distance from the forest parking lot
Pooh Bridge,
where children race floating sticks down the stream
Christopher Robin was the real son of the author
Together they tromped through this open space as a family in the 1920s
Christopher named his teddy bear 'Winnie'
after a bear he'd seen in the London Zoo
The real bear was from Winnipeg, Canada
'Pooh' was the name of a swan they saw on holiday
The first Winnie-The-Pooh collection of stories was published by AA Milne in 1926
Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Eeyore, and Piglet were other stuffed animals
belonging to young Christopher
They now sit in the New York City Public Library
Interestingly, as an adult
Christopher founded
Harbour Bookshop in Dartmouth
(now closed)

| Surrounded by gorse and heather, we had a feeling we were nearing a Huffalump Trap |
As we were pelted by rain
endured blustery winds
and experienced disorienting fog,
I could just hear a sweet tubby bear exclaiming
Oh, bother
“What day is it?" asked Pooh.
''It's today," squeaked Piglet.
''My favorite day," said Pooh.
― A.A. Milne

Sorry I missed this little spot when I was in England. I did a tour of the NY Library a couple of years ago and saw the well-loved creatures : )
I always love your photos, and you are seeing so many nostalgic and beautiful beautiful places!
Tiddlypom! x
A lovely story and dreamy pics. M x
I really adore this post! We used to visit Sussex a lot many years ago and have happy memories of this area. We played 'Pooh Sticks' from that very bridge. What a perfect time to visit - am green with envy! Minerva x
Beautiful, and yes, just like a fairy tale!
if we could only live in Pooh Country..hey wait...I kind of do!
Oh, how sweet! I love your photos, especially the last one :)

Pooh country! How perfect, just like the quotation you give of the short exchange between adorable Piglet and Pooh: "What day is it? It's today! My favourite day, said Pooh"! Isn't that the most perfect philosophy to life?! I grew up on Winnie the Pooh stories and now I read them to my grandson!
YOu gotta love Pooh! What a lovely area to have tea!
i love your posts--thank you for sharing sites and sights i may never see :)
What a sweet post, Laura! (Even if the title sounds a little risky)! ;) It would be a magical place to visit- bringing to life all those wonderful childhood stories. I love that you are making the most of your time there, and sharing it with us. Thanks!
Hello Laura! This is my first visit to your blog; can you BELIEVE it? Where have I been all this time. Goodness knows ;-)
I have a little tear in my eye. You see, after living for fifteen years in France, I feel huely nostalgic for my native corner of the world; yes, Winnie The Pooh country (aka Ashdown Forest) is where I grew up. Well 10 miles away. You have captured it perfectly and for that I thank you.
I am off to follow you at last.
Stephanie
oh! beautiful!! i have a friend who lives nr there and they go running through the forest. so jealous.
This is just what I love about this beautiful country! Thanks for sharing! Ada :)
I lived Winnie the Pooh books and your pictures bring back memories of taking the children there to visit and playing pooh sticks with them.

Ha! You are so right about the title! I hadn't noticed how it might sound until now :)
What a charming place to be from! Welcome to my space - now popping to yours :)
That looks like the most wonderful day out, so enchanting!
How sweet! I love Pooh and that is JUST what I thought the 100 Acre Wood looked like!
Oh I love Pooh and it is exactly as I imagined it would be. Thank you for taking me back to many happy memories of my parents reading to me. This is a magical place.
Beautiful and just as
I would picture it.....
Swoon!

Just wonderful! I never went to this part of the world while living in the UK. Such a shame. Will have to put it on my list for when we visit next. Elaina xo
The TV news program Sunday Morning (CBS) did a nice story on Winnie the Pooh and his author. When I was in college decades ago, it was the in thing to do read Winnie the Pooh and analyze it for a deeper meaning. I still have my copy that my college roommate gave me for the 21st birthday. So cool that you have visited the 100 Acre Wood.
Glad you waited for the right time of the year, so pretty. And what a lovely day it is.
What a lovely day out!
xx
Just a pleasant today, Pooh. Just loved reading this.
OOOOOhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! I love it, how I envy you!!! :o :) Marina
Thanks for taking us along.
My parents live in Sussex so I'm thinking this is a place my children would LOVE to visit! Speaking of my parents, my dad went to school with Christopher Robin's son. My claim to fame. ;-)

Oh my this is soooo fun...how I would love to visit this magical place. Thank you for visiting me the other day and leaving such a sweet comment.
Happy midweek to you...xo
Absolutely beautiful photos. Exactly what part of England is this in? My daughter is crazy for Pooh and I'd love to take her here.
Wet but beautiful! Many places in that part of the country seem like children's book illustrations to me.
What a great story!
It is in the south :) I think it is on the Kent, Surrey, Sussex border.
Yes, indeed ;)
I discovered your blog on Elizabeth's Pine Cones and Acorns. I really enjoyed this post about visiting Ashdown Forest. I was in Sussex last year in September visiting Sissinghurst and Charleston. I wish I had gone to Ashdown. Thanks for sharing all your great photos. What a treat that trip must have been!
Love this post! Thanks for the tour and bit of history on my favourite characters :)
I really enjoy reading your blog! I found it while I was looking for expat blogs so I could get a sense of what's it like to live in England. Can't wait to visit Ashdown Forest with my little one.
Hi Laure, nice to meet you too! You're doing much better than me, I haven't posted since the course began!
I absolutely love your header. I will be back!

An AWARD for you in my blog
I had no idea this place existed. "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree" was one of my now 30 year old son's favourite books.
